The Spanish 8 reale coin, traditionally referred to as a Piece of 8, was the world's most widely circulated coin of the past three centuries. Because of their uniform size, weight, and metal purity these coins traded in virtually every civilized country. Counterfeit coins existed and many merchants, particularly in the Far East, took steps to determine if the coins were genuine. They did this by applying "chopmarks" with a small hammer to evaluate the coin. By stamping the surface of the coin with this tool a merchant or banker could determine if the coin was genuine or merely silver plated. Many coins that circulated in the Orient such as ours have their surfaces covered with these distinctive "chops".

Our jeweler has set this rare 1780 coin in a custom designed sterling silver frame. Your piece will arrive on your choice of necklace along with a descriptive brochure and Certificate of Authenticity.
