One of the oldest decorative gemstones was agate. Ancient Greeks, Sumerians, and Egyptians used agates in jewelry and in their religious ceremonies. Agate bowls were used in the Byzantine Empire, and many museums including the Lourve exhibit amazing specimens.
Usually found as a round nodule, the concentric bands of minerals build up over time like rings on a tree.
