Medusa Coin Ring, 350 B.C.
This custom-made ring holds an excellent example of a hemidrachm coin with the image of Medusa. The coin as been mounted in a custom 14kt gold ring with a solid 9mm wide shank.
The mythological and historical context surrounding Medusa is as fascinating as the coins themselves. Daughter of the sea gods Phorcys and Ceto, she was once a beautiful maiden but was turned into a snake-haired monster by Athena for sleeping with Poseidon in Athena's temple. Throughout history Medusa's frightening appearance on coins served a propaganda purpose, in this case announcing to enemies and would-be enemies, "Don't mess with us."
