Issued during the rule of Alexius I, Byzantine Emperor from 1048-1118. This coin is a Hyperpyron, which means "pure gold" in Greek. The coin is actually 20.5 carat gold, which was very high for Byzantine coins. Struck in a slightly concave shape known as a scyphate, the cup shape was adopted for ease of stacking coins. Very few of these gold coins have survived the past ten centuries. Accented with .33 carat marquise cut diamond.
Comes with descriptive brochure, Certificate of Authenticity and 16" fashion cord necklace.
